Scrappy or Coordinated? Well, I will admit that I have been afraid of “going outside the lines” when choosing fabric and usually will choose fabrics for a quilt that are all by the same designer, if not from the same line. This past year I have been breaking free of those constraints and with the help of two very talented friends (I am looking at you, @colorgirlquilts and @cassandra.beaver ) I have been learning to choose fabrics that may be from different designers and hey, different manufacturers!!! Going coordinated or scrappy can really change up how I design a quilt and obviously the whole look of a quilt. For example, the quilt above is my Rising Star pattern (still available in the current issue of @makemodernmagazine ). The first picture is using the Kaffe Fassett line that is available in stores this February. The background is a Kaffe shot cotton, the backing is a Kaffe wideback. Swipe to see another version of this quilt. This one was created by asking friends and members of two bees I am in to use any bright fabrics for the stars and scrappy low volume for the background. The rest of the background is improv pieced using scrappy low volumes. When I was laying this quilt out, it didn’t want to be laid out in the same systematic way the Kaffe version is. It was more dynamic and needed a layout that enhanced that energy. So, how about you? More coordinated or more scrappy? My year of color! Less brown and neutrals this year, the large greens surprised me. Must be the influence of my youngest, his favorite color is green. #yearofcolor2018 #yearofcolour2018

This mini quilt encompasses a number of things I learned this year. It was a challenge given to me by @cassandra.beaver The challenge was to make a minimalist quilt under 24” using only one print and as many solids as I wanted and straight line quilting. This was definitely a challenge for me as I don’t always go with the “less is more” idea in my designs. Also, I am working on color play and this was a great simple exercise in use of color, there is only one print but there are six neutrals. The straight line quilting gave me the opportunity to play with thread weight and how it helps a design. I added Trapunto quilting to the challenge since I had taken a class in it this year and I felt this piece was a great opportunity to utilize this new knowledge. In the end, this minimalist mini quilt finished at 23x18 inches and has 484 pieces of fabric. It took me two weeks to create. @colorgirlquilts is asking us to post something we have learned for today’s #mycreative2018 prompt. Today’s #mycreative2018 prompt from @colorgirlquilts is favorite tool. These are clamps I bought at my local big box hardware store. I mainly use them when I baste my quilts. I clamp the backing to my table and then lay the batting and backing on top. I’ve actually been getting better basted quilt sandwiches this way and my knees thank me! I like this brand because they are easy for my smaller hands to get around and have a latch for easy release.

Oops! I forgot to post yesterday’s #mycreative2018 photo, made for me! I went on a retreat back in October and only worked on things for me. This is the #bionicgearbag I made and have been using non-stop. The exterior panel is made of selvedges that I wove together using a @weftyneedle Well, I had help as the panel was started at a @centralohiomqg meeting where I demonstrated the #weftyneedle. I’ll be back on track with @colorgirlquilts #mycreative2018 prompts later today!
