Wayward

I feel a bit wayward this week. I’m here, I’m there, the weather is all over the place, and time is just flying by.

Seriously, I can’t believe the season has changed, the temperature nosedived about 40 degrees, and we are on the second to last block of the Quilt Concert!!

Although, as the sew-in ends many other things are starting. The Potholder Swap sign ups are still open and I look forward to seeing what everyone makes for their partners. And did I mention that Hancock’s of Paducah is sponsoring it? Isn’t that freaking the bomb? Join in while you still can! The sign up form is on the Swap Info Page.

I started taking pottery classes. I’ve always wanted to learn how to throw pottery on a wheel and create a simple mug. Currently my simple mug is lopsided with a handle that isn’t straight either, but I’ll be damned if I don’t drink out of it.

In a few weeks I’ll also be going to a glass blowing class. I’ve actually done this a few times now, as well as taken a beginner’s course in glass bead making. I just need to win the lottery so I can just create stuff all the time!

I don’t know what it is about the creating and making that brings me such joy. In grad school I did various designs for theatre, but it was much more fun making those designs come to life. I do know it’s amazingly helpful to have this outlet as the days get shorter and colder.

Well, enough about me. I know you all came here for Block 15 of the Quilt Concert Series, so lets get to that. Remember, previous blocks can be purchased at The Not So Dramatic Life and Shoppe Lovingly, Lissa. We will have 2 weeks to catch up and complete your quilt top before the Quilt Along ends.

Wayward can now be found at Shoppe Lovingly Lissa

Sponsor and Giveaway.

So, here is a pretty cool sponsor. Sewfine Thread Gloss. It’s pretty amazing stuff. Any thread that I use for any type of handwork, whether it be binding, applique, embroidery, or Sashiko. First thing I do is pull it through a tin of Sewfine. It prevents the thread from tangling up and pulls so much smoother through fabric. I think it even helps strengthen the Invisifil thread I’ve been using to applique lately. (Did you know I once tried to thread my own hair on a needle thinking it was the length of Invisifil I had just cut?)

Plus it smells beautiful. I was very wary of using it because I avoid scented everything. But I really love the tins I bought at Quiltcon Together this past year. I have Smash and Pink Macaroon. I was sent a mini tin of Pina Colada as a special gift in that order and it wound up being my favorite of the three.

This week Sewfine will send a winner from the Quilt Concert Series three tins of thread gloss. Who will that lucky, lucky person be? The winner must reside in the United States or Canada to receive the prize.

Whirling around

Oh my goodness, it’s been a crazy week around here! Announcing the Potholder Swap earlier this week and getting ready for it has kept me on my toes! I’m very excited about the swap and the new pattern I wrote for it, but it has been quite the journey this week getting ready for it.

If you haven’t seen it yet, Hollyhock is the name of the pattern for the swap. I’ll have the pattern up on my Etsy site very soon if you want to make yourself a potholder but don’t want to join the swap.

I was able to grab a few moments to work on the Quilt Concert Series which was refreshing. It’s so nice to find time at the sewing machine.

Are you ready to work on the next block? It’s called Whirligig. I love saying that word, it just rolls off the tongue.

Whirligig is now available at The Not So Dramatic Life

There are only 2 blocks left to go, but all previous blocks are available! Head to The Not So Dramatic Life for cutting instructions and the even numbered block patterns and to Shoppe Lovingly Lissa for the odd numbered block patterns.

Our Sponsors this Week

We have two wonderful sponsors for the Quilt Concert this week. Let me present them to you.

Sew to Speak is a glorious local quilt shop in Worthington, Ohio. It is stocked with quilting cotton, garment fabric, and skeins and skeins of various yarns. There is always a warm welcome waiting for you and plenty of help if you need an extra set of eyes picking the perfect fabric.

Make Modern is Australia’s only dedicated modern quilt magazine. It began in 2014 when a group of passionate quilters had a dream of producing a magazine for quilters, by quilters, filled with beautiful patterns and articles to inspire quilters like us to make more modern quilts!

In order to enter for the prize drawing you must do the following

1-post a photo of your Whirligig block on Instagram using a public Instagram account by 11:59 Eastern on Thursday, September 23, 2021  (if you don’t want to make your primary account public, you can always create a second, public account to use for this quilt along and other projects like this)

FALL SWAP ANNOUNCEMENT

And now…. the moment you have all been waiting for!

POTHOLDER SWAP 2021

Baking season is arriving very soon, and what better way to start off creating all those delicious goodies than with a brand new pair of Potholders and Oven Mitts?

Yup, you read that right. Participants are making 2 (TWO) potholders/oven mitts for their partner!

All paid participants will receive my Hollyhocks Potholder pattern. You do not need to make this pattern for your partner.

This is a great pattern for anyone who has never paper pieced before. I’ve included step by step paper piecing instructions with diagrams! Also, step by step binding instructions for anyone who hasn’t put binding on a non-90 degree angle before. There are a lot of diagrams….seriously…. a lot.

Want the pattern, but don’t want to be in the SWAP? That’s okay! The pattern will be available at Shoppe Lovingly Lissa

SPONSOR!!!

I am so excited to announce that Hancock’s of Paducah will be sponsoring this SWAP!!! If you post by the deadlines using the #potholderswap2021 and #lovinglylissaswaps hashtags you will be entered. No worries if you live outside the United States, because I will substitute a $15 gift card to a local quilt shop for you. Winners are chosen by a random number generator.

For more details on the Swap head over to the SWAP INFO PAGE.

There are a myriad of potholder and oven mitt patterns out there in the big wide world. But to get you started with some ideas a few Pattern Designer Friends of mine have sent me the links to their patterns and tutorials.

First, let’s start with some cute oven mitts for your small helpers. These toddler oven mitts from Geeky Bobbin are too cute! It’s the kind of thing that makes me wish my kids were still little (and that doesn’t happen often).

Here are some awesome tutorials…

Bobbin in Quilts has a great photo tutorial for these potholders.

And here is a beautiful folded star potholder from Patchwork and Poodles.

Want a potholder with pockets? Check out Ameroonie Designs for this tutorial and more! She has several potholder tutorials available.

Have you wanted to learn Quilt as You Go? Here is your opportunity from Confessions of a Homeschooler.

And you absolutely cannot go wrong with these adorable Cupcake Potholders from Blossom Heart Quilts.

So how about it? Are you ready to join the swap? Early sign ups are available to newsletter subscribers (sign up below) starting Friday, September 23rd. It will open for everyone on Monday the 27th.

Happy Swapping!!

“I can still hear you saying”

“You would never break the chain”

So, we really didn’t choose our blocks based on songs, but it is always wonderful when when of them creates an earworm for a while.

This week is Malvina’s Chain. It really is a simple block, with a bit of a challenge thrown in. There are 9 hour glass blocks, which are simple enough to create…if they were all two color blocks. LOL! Two of the blocks in Malvina’s Chain have THREE colors, so it’s a bit of a twist and a bit of a think through. Please be sure to read all the directions first!

Malvina’s Chain Block Pattern can be purchased at Shoppe Lovingly Lissa

We are getting closer and closer to the end of the Quilt Concert! If you are missing a block, there is plenty of time to catch up. Visit The Not So Dramatic Life Etsy for cutting instructions and all even numbered blocks, Shoppe Lovingly Lissa is where you will find the odd blocks.

Our Sponsor this Week

Color Girl Quilts is our wonderful sponsor this week. Check out her great patterns and curated fabric bundles. Sharon has a wonderful way with color and fabrics and always knows the exact right ones to put together (I’m really jealous of this). Also, she is the creator of the Classic Curves Ruler, seriously people, if you ever wanted to create a quilt with a curve this is the ruler to do it with!!! I lost all fear of creating curves with this ruler.

Sharon will be sending one U.S. Concert Goer this fabric bundle from the Aerial line by Tamara Kate for Windham Fabrics. I have loved this line since it came out and have managed to find uses for at least three of the fabrics, so you may have seen them recently in my feed. (Or even in this post, hint hint)
