Oh my goodness, it’s been a crazy week around here! Announcing the Potholder Swap earlier this week and getting ready for it has kept me on my toes! I’m very excited about the swap and the new pattern I wrote for it, but it has been quite the journey this week getting ready for it.

If you haven’t seen it yet, Hollyhock is the name of the pattern for the swap. I’ll have the pattern up on my Etsy site very soon if you want to make yourself a potholder but don’t want to join the swap.

I was able to grab a few moments to work on the Quilt Concert Series which was refreshing. It’s so nice to find time at the sewing machine.

POTHOLDER SWAP 2021

Baking season is arriving very soon, and what better way to start off creating all those delicious goodies than with a brand new pair of Potholders and Oven Mitts?

Yup, you read that right. Participants are making 2 (TWO) potholders/oven mitts for their partner!

“You would never break the chain”

So, we really didn’t choose our blocks based on songs, but it is always wonderful when when of them creates an earworm for a while.

This week is Malvina’s Chain. It really is a simple block, with a bit of a challenge thrown in. There are 9 hour glass blocks, which are simple enough to create…if they were all two color blocks. LOL! Two of the blocks in Malvina’s Chain have THREE colors, so it’s a bit of a twist and a bit of a think through. Please be sure to read all the directions first!

I love the blocks that bring songs to my mind. Well, I love all the blocks in First Notes, who am I kidding?

This block uses templates, just like a few weeks ago. It is a nice introduction to template piecing and nothing to be afraid of. Using templates creates less fabric waste and helps with precision.

The Wyoming Valley is NOT in Wyoming, it is Pennsylvania. Did you already know that? I didn’t, but Sister Jaquelyn made me take Calculus and not Geography my senior year of High School. I may not know what is East and West of me, but boy I could derive integrals like nobody’s business way back when. (secret: I honestly loved Calculus and all Math, but I still wish I could have taken Geography too)

Now that I’ve got that off my chest, let’s get on with Block #10 in First Notes of the Quilt Concert Series.

I really love the options to this block. By playing with value and color placement, you can create so many star shapes out of one quilt block!

Oh, for a life on the rolling sea!

Let’s fly, let’s fly away!

This week for Block 8 we are Flying North!

This is one of our 12″ x 6″ rectangular blocks. I have a great fondness for these blocks, they’re a break from the boring old square. LOL!

I like finding other designs in a block (see my “bug block” a few posts back) This block, with the green fabric in the center makes me think of a fir tree.

We will answer questions about the Quilt Concert as they arise, but mainly we all just hang out and talk quilt talk. I’m not saying this week’s block will win you big money, but it is called Good Luck Token, so you never know!!

I found this block to be very interesting to piece together. It took me some time to properly pattern it in the easiest way possible, without much waste. I love problem solving like that. I enjoy those “lightbulb” moments when everything falls into place. Creating the pattern for this block was one of those moments.

There is a new method in this block that we haven’t used before in the Quilt Concert Series. You will be using a template included in the pattern to create the individual triangles.

Block Tip!

Before you trace and cut out the triangles of this block, use Best Press or another spray starch on it. This helps prevent the bias edge from stretching and making the block wonky!!!
