Let’s Swap!!!

I am so ready to host another Swap!

It was really fun hosting the Pincushion Swap. I’ve been a little busy with the Quilt Concert Series so I can’t handle a large swap like that, but I still really want to do something.

So, let’s have a Quilt Postcard Swap! Have you seen the fabric/quilt postcards on Instagram? They’re all over the place there. Sarah Ruiz did a 100 day project with them (that turned out much larger). Inspired by her and out of sew-jo at the beginning of pandemic I started making them as well. First I surprised all my quilty friends by mailing them one, then I took requests from Instagram. All in all I think I made and sent over 50. I can’t begin to tell you how much this meant to me.

How do you make a Quilt Post Card?

I’m taking the easy way out and just linking you to Sarah’s tutorial. It’s what I use after all. When I do the satin stitch edging, my first lap is with a larger satin stitch. I think it is .5 on my machine. That’s the length, not the width. Then my second lap is as small as I can go and the machine still moves the fabric, which is .2. I love the look of the satin stitch edging.

You can absolutely send the postcards through the mail with a postcard stamp on the back. But, be aware, the will get dirty. For safety’s sake I put them in a 5″ x 7″ envelope and added a little extra postage. (I’m in the U.S. so I’m not sure how this would work in other countries.) I did mail international. I just brought it to the post office to have them tell me how much it would be.

The postcards I made varied from very intricate to extremely simple.

All of the above were previous projects that I cut to size. It was fun seeing them become something useful and pretty instead of just sitting in a box. I did add the black cat with raw-edge applique to the pink block in the center.

These were some simple straight edge, straight stitch pieces. Calming and satisfying to create.

I began to play and experiment here. I really love the way the matchstick quilting one in the upper left turned out, but everyone on Instagram started to request the free circle quilted ones. I made quite a few of those.

Everyone knows I love to hand stitch. Of course there were some Sashiko and Kogin pieces. I also learned couching during this time and created three pieces with that.

Celebrating the holidays!!! Halloween is my favorite Holiday. So I made special themed postcards to share my joy.

I even created a special pattern!

This is the Sunburst Block pattern. It finishes as 4″ x 6″, perfect for a postcard.

EVERYONE who signs up and pays for the swap will receive this pattern as a thank you. If you would like the pattern and not the Swap I have it listed in my Etsy shop for sale.

Information about the Swap is on the Swap Info page. Sign ups begin July 16 for everyone who is signed up for my newsletter by the 15th. Sign ups for all open on the 19th and close on 21st. This Swap is open to everyone all over the world and you can choose to ship locally or globally when you sign up.

I look forward to seeing your creations!

Lovingly,

Lissa

La la la laaaaaaaaa la la la

We are really warmed up now in First Notes. We’ve had opportunities to perfect the Half Square Triangle and some Flying Geese. How are all those points working out for you?

This week’s block focuses on a new technique. I’ve always called it a stitch and flip, mainly because you stitch a diagonal line, cut, and then flip the top fabric open to create the block. I’m sure there are other names for it, and I would love to hear what you call it in the comments.

Without further ado here is Pinwheel.

Pinwheel Pattern can now be purchased at Shoppe Lovingly Lissa Etsy Shop for $2.

Do you need to catch up with previous week blocks? The cutting directions and all even numbered blocks can be found at The Not So Dramatic Life Etsy Shop and all odd number blocks can be found at Shoppe Lovingly Lissa Etsy Shop.

Fox and Geese Around a Double T

Welcome to the first block of First Notes! This one is one of our favorites, although I will admit I have many favorites in this quilt.

The block is actually two traditional blocks in one. The center block of the Fox and Geese block is a plain square, but we added in the Double T for a bit more interest. I really love the way the Double T looks on its own, it’s a great block to put into a grid, it creates a variety of secondary designs depending on you lay it all out.

This pattern is now available on my Etsy site for $2

Just a reminder that cutting instructions are no longer available to download for free, but you can purchase the cutting instructions at Cassandra’s Etsy store for $2.

Week Two Sponsor

Our fantastic Sponsor for Week Two is Becky Campbell of Sewforever Quilting.

Becky has written a special post for this Quilt Concert participants, so be sure to check it out.

The prize this week is a set of Lucy Boston templates from the English Paper Piecing Made Modern series.

“Reusable self-stick templates enable you to precisely cut and efficiently straight stitch shapes with no pre-turning, basting/gluing. Straight-stitch by hand or machine instead of tradition whip-stitching, saving time and improving results. Move the templates from task to task with no residue and nothing to pull out later.”

It’s time to play the music.

It’s time to light the lights, and raise the curtain!

Introducing…

First Notes

First Notes is the first quilt in the Quilt Concert Series and Cassandra and I are so thrilled to introduce it to you. For this version I chose 4 print fabrics and 1 solid. The result reminds me of an impressionist painting.

The Cutting Instructions are available at Cassandra’s Etsy Store for $2 now.

Opening week Sponsor.

Hobbs has manufactured high-quality quilt batting (wadding) for hobbyist, commercial, art and show quilters since 1978.

Hobbs is sponsoring 4 prizes during this quilt along along with the grand prize. This week’s prize is a queen size 80/20 bleached batting.

Heirloom® Premium Cotton Blend is made from 80% long staple cotton fibers and 20% fine polyester. This combination of fibers creates a strong, long-wearing batt and is very easy to handle. The batting is lightly needle punched and treated with a soft resin to provide stability to the fibers and prevent the polyester from bearding. This process makes Heirloom® Cotton Blend Batting uniquely easy to quilt by hand.

Laying Down Tracks

A musical artist doesn’t just go to the studio and sing a song. There are multiple parts to it, the various instruments, background vocals, etc. Each part is a track and you lay them altogether to create the song.

This is a great metaphor to designing the quilt for the Quilt Concert. There were so many parts to it.

First, Cassandra and I laid the first track, the layout. Cassandra designed four different layouts for the quilt. We looked at quilt size, how many components, and the overall layout.

Then was what I considered the fun part!! (well, they were all fun, but this is one of my favorites) I sat down with the newest edition of Barbara Brackman’s Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns to choose blocks. Luckily we had some ground rules on what to pick (or I would still be deciding). We were looking for blocks that had basic piecing techniquess and ones that could be divisible by six to help make the math manageable.

There were many more post its before we started to narrow it down.

I was honestly surprised that we didn’t have the exact same blocks chosen! Although there were a few on Cassandra’s list that almost made mine.

From these blocks we chose our top 16. Then we decided on the scale of the block. Some blocks, such as the Fox and Geese around a Double T, were meant to be larger size. I cannot imagine trying to create that block to finish at 6″.

We also had 4 rectangle blocks to create. After looking at the other blocks chosen, we saw there were plenty of half square triangles, flying geese, and stitch and flip blocks. We utilized these basic quilt techniques to create the four rectangle blocks that appear quite seamlessly into the quilt.

Line drawings, to scale, were created and printed out, along with the layout. I used these printouts to play with where the blocks looked best. I’m learning to use programs to design, but there are moments when actual physical manipulation allows me to spend all my mental energy focusing on the design as opposed to using more than half my mental acuity on the computer part.

Coloring came next. This leaned heavily on Cassandra’s amazing ability on the use of color. She screen shared her colorized version of the quilt and we moved some colors around before deciding on the final quilt version.

Now, for the name. Quilt Concert Series #1 is NOT the name of the quilt! Bet you didn’t know that. We put our quilts together and spent time with our flimsies to see what the name should be. Kinda like when I had my kids, I needed to meet them first before I named them.

So what is the name? Well, that is a secret that will be announced in due time. So just stay tuned.

This quilt top is designed to use a total of five yards of fabric. You can use the amounts listed below, or you can mix and match as much as you like. This would make an awesome scrappy quilt if you want to pull from your stash!

Was it a success?

I’m talking about the pincushion swap. Was it successful?

I’d like to think so. From everything I’m seeing I think it was a resounding “YES!”

We had 80 participants, and as of right now not a single need for an angel pincushion.

I’ve seen some absolutely amazing pincushions being sent.

I’ve seen wonderful thank you’s posted.

I’ve been chatting with many of you on Instagram and I feel like there’s been quite a bit of community created.

Will I host another swap?

HELLS YEAH!!!!!!

Current swappers should expect a survey soon to help me plan for the next one.

If you want to be in the know, please sign up for my newsletter. Newsletter recipients will get advance notice of my swaps.

I’m feeling pretty dang successful.
