Monthly Color Challenge, June 2023

Have you been participating in the Monthly Color Challenge hosted by Patterns by Jen? This year her inspiration is Classic Cars and we’ve been having so much fun!

You may think grey is a bit of a boring color to use, but I don’t find that necessarily true. Grey is a wonderful color to experiment with. Can it enhance a dull color or enhance a bright color? It can be a great focal or background color in a quilt.

For this month’s block I chose a medium grey solid and paired it with a dark blue with white print fabric to make it stand out.

I began by pressing my fabric using Best Press. I find that adding a little starch (or a non-starch in this case) helps keep the fabric from stretching especially when the cut pieces are small.

I used my AccuQuilt Go! cutter, 4″ Qube, and 6″ Qube to cut out the squares and half square rectangles.

You are going to use the same stitch and flip method to create the block, but there is a little less waste here. Just line up the small triangle so that the short raw edges line up on either side of a corner of the large square. use the diagonal of the triangle to measure your 1/4″ seam allowance as you sew. Trim, flip and iron.

Be sure to follow Jen’s instructions for pressing so you have nice flat seams.

Then take off down the highway with your new block!

Lovingly, Lissa
